  • Brno is with its 230 square km second biggest city in Czech Republic and one of 100 biggest cities in Europe.
  • Brno is situated at the crossroads of ancient trade routes which have joined northern and southern European civilizations for centuries, it connected Slovakia, Austria, Poland and Bohemia.
  • You can get to the city from international airport (Tuřany), by train or coach. Around the town you can use public buses, trams or trolleys.
  • Brno is a „city of students“: 10 higher schools and universities offer higher education for nearly 65 thousands students.
  • Town (or castle) of Brno was surely found before 1000 AD, first mention we can find in Cosmas´ Chronica from year 1091.
  • In 1777 the bishopric of Brno was established by the Catholic Church.
  • Brno Exhibiton Centre is one of the largest (capacity of 30.000 visitors) and oldest (established in 1928) exhibiton centres in the world.
  • In historical centre of Brno you can find the most thin hotel building in Europe, Hotel Avion on Česká Street, built in 1928 on a parcel of width only 8 metres.
  • Brno has one building added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites – functionalist Villa Tugendhat, finnished in 1930 (only one example of modern architecture on the list UNESCO from Czech Republic).
  • Only in 2001 after excavating works the second largest charnel house in Europe was found in underground of Brno with 50.000 pieces of skeletons.
  • In 19th century Brno was called Moravian Manchester due to high level of textile industry. At present Brno is used to be mentioned as Moravian Silicon Valley due to development of information technology.
  • Best view on city you can find at the top of two highest dominant of city: the Špilberk Castle and fortress and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.
  • Brno city is one of the most square-concentrated cities in Europe; the best-known are Náměstí Svobody, Mendlovo náměstí (Mendel Square), Moravské náměstí, Jakubské náměstí and several other.
  • Brno is one of the most theater concentrated places in Europe with its groups and buildings per inhabitant.
  • Brno as a nest of front world famous Czech authors: Bohumil Hrabal and Milan Kundera were born in Brno, Karel Čapek attended a high school there.
  • In Brno you can find the largest cemetry in Czech Republic (56 square metres), among another interesting persons you can find a grave of famouc composer Leos Janáček.
  • Unique dialect called Hantec still exist among Brno´s inhabitants. In Brno city no one says: „I´ll take a tram.“ – „I´ll take a šalina,“ is correct in this area.
