YOU NEED KNOW ABOUT THE CUISINE IN CZECH REPUBLIC AND BRNO…

  • Czech people always loved food and cooking, in history of the country there were issued many recipes books; to the most famous authors of 19th century Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová and Anastasia B. Seidelová belong.
  • As the Czech Republic lies in the heart of Europe, Czech cuisine cover many influences throughout countries of Europe.
  • Brno was always situated on important trade roads, Brno´s food and cuisine was influenced by German, Austrian, Slovakia and even Hungarian. Food of Jewish and Balkan cuisine was important as well (for example filled peppers became domesticated). 
  • Key planted ingredients in Czech cuisine are wheat (and other cereals), potatoes and cabbage.
  • Evidence of planting of cucumbers in 9th century were found in South Moravia (the archeological excavation proved). People further have invented how to conservate them by salt and vinegar for winter period of year.
  • Moravia is well-known for its vineyards, the establishment of monasteries contributed to their expansion in past times. Monks cared about wine production for saint-mass purposes.

  • The main role in Brno´s cuisine played open-air markets on several areas and squares more than hunderd years ago. There were separately sold ingredients on fish market, fruit market, vegetable market, chicken market and others.
  • In history of Brno, there were two main delicates that were delivered even to the Wiener court – goose liver and white asparagus.
  • Until 1934, the oldest guesthouse in the world was operated in Brno for nearly thousand years, called U Modrého lva (By the Blue Lion).
  • At present days you can find many cosmopolitan or national cuisines in Brno (Italian, French, Vietnamese, Chinese, Sweden, Indian, Mexican, Turkish… restaurant or bistro are operated there). Also you can find a few ones that offer traditional Czech menu.
